No, but his left leg has some kind of fortification his right does not
I believe he played with that at SDSU and it’s becoming more common for QBs to wear a brace on their left (or lead) knee similar to O lineman as it has a tendency to be the one that gets rolled up on when dropping back. It’s more precautionary than anything.

Maybe the narrative would have been slightly different if he would have completed the pass, the wide open easiest of throws, for a TD. But he didn’t. He looked like an 80’s option QB throwing the ball. And frankly, Iowa fans have a right to be a little critical after what we’ve seen over the past 5 years. It’s inexcusable.
Is this "a little critical"?

But he was nervous, guys.
No one is denying it was a shitty throw. He had a lot of really shitty throws. The one to Gill up the sideline was terrible. The screen to Anderson was the worst one because he wasn’t on the move and still short armed it.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess they start him out with a couple of boot legs early to TEs just to calm him down against Iowa State.

But again, if he sucks, I don’t think Lester is going to hesitate to go to Brown.

It did, and not a single person is saying he shouldn't have completed it or it wasn't the easiest throw in the world. He got far better from then on, so given that and his history it points to it being an anomaly. We shall see.

The other factor is that even if Iowa State looks at that film yesterday and says "we're going to just stack the box or unload on him via blitz" that is far more dangerous for them than in years past given he can actually scramble and run or take shots.

The forward pass longer than 5 yards is simply too risky in today’s game.

I think ultimately his ability to run/maneuver in the pocket will pay dividends. It really did look like he got a case of the yips early on and couldn’t shake it off. Just let it rip, young fella. There were opportunities downfield but he couldn’t/wouldn't pull the trigger.

it’s almost like someone is constantly reminding our qb’s that passes beyond 10 yards put our families lives at risk so think hard before you pull the trigger.

it wish we could find that person and fire them.

It's almost like no one remembers seasons like the one where Iowa needed to block two kicks to beat UNI in the season opener, everyone came here to cry about how shitty the team was and how the season was basically over, then Iowa went on to finish #7 in the country.
I tried to go back and find the game thread for the 2009 UNI game....a LOT of PSD threads to sort through.

I was at the Field of Dreams concert during the game. Anyone have the clip showing Gronowski bouncing the ball on the touchdown pass attempt?
Remember the scene where Jackson wants Ray to hit him some fly balls so he can work on his outfield stuff? And then Ray picks up a bat and ball and hits it straight into the ground, producing an eye roll of disappointment from Shoeless Joe?

it was like that, but worse.

I guess the reason I’m not freaking out is it appeared someone got wide open on every play, Gronowski just looked nervous as shit, hesitated and didn’t throw with any confidence until after it was 10-7. If that continues to be the case they have someone that started games at Auburn backing him up. Gill put that defensive back in a blender in that 3rd down in the red zone. Perfect route, perfect throw. That throw plus the 4th down TD pass to Wetjen are what makes me think his early struggles were just nerves. He started 2-8, finished 6 for his last 7.

It was Albany but both left tackles looked pretty damn good.

I’m most concerned about Harrell at MLB. He just doesn’t appear to have great instincts. Sharar looked good. Defensive line looked better as the game went on. Albanys qb missed some throws that probably made the DBs look better than they maybe were but a lot of that was due to pressure and that all goes hand in hand.

Special teams were really good.
I’m not great at judging linebackers on television because you can’t always see what their assignments likely are (usually I can have a good idea when I’m at the game and can see everything), but I thought the same thing about Harrell.

He sure looked lost on the read option in the first half

IowaFan freaking out and bitching relentlessly after Week 1. I watched pretty much every game on some level and multiple other teams struggled or looked worse than Iowa.

Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota all looked worse and struggled more.

I don't think people are freaking out about the team, just the QB and rightfully so

Of course.

What several dipshits in this thread obviously missed in my post is the term "a factor", as in one of several. The most obvious factor was Gronowski played terribly, he was clearly nervous, missed easy throws, had poor footwork, etc. But this was a very scaled back gameplan.
I don't think people are concerned about him not going for 250+ or something. A scaled back game plan isn't really a factor in him missing easy throws.

Indiana had 500 yards of offense. Wisconsin looks like they will suck. I think their starting QB got hurt as well. Minnesota wasn’t playing a great team but they are a level up from Albany

So now Iowa throws to their receivers too much and don’t throw to their TEs enough?

Indiana gave up 218 yards rushing to Old Dominion.

Edit to add that stats for the ODU QB are pretty funny. Couldn’t throw for shit, threw 3 picks but couldn’t be stopped on the ground.

Again, you are misrepresenting what I'm saying. I'm not sure I can write it any more clearly. Maybe AI?

And Iowa won yesterday.
Then they only beat Arkansas St by 3 a few weeks later.

it’s Iowa football.

On a completely different note, did one of the announcers actually say "tuddy". If so, I'd like to shit in a bag and light it on fire on the guy's front porch.

I hated the LB in the first half, but I think most of that was communication and confidence, not athletic ability. I think they can get that worked out. The CB and QB worries are more significant, but I believe gronkowski got most of his big plays off of downfield throws and the threat of him running the ball, which is not the stuff they ran yesterday. He threw the ball better the more he ran, but it was surprisingly bad yesterday.
