BTN replayed the Penn State game from last year the other day. For all the talk of Stanley and Fant and WR's and who is going to play safety, that game reminded me how this season could be changed completely by Epenesa.

The series in the 2nd quarter with about 8 minutes left in the half was rage boner inducing. He started off on first down by exploding off the line and blowing up the #2 pick in the NFL draft sending him flying about 5 feet in the air. The next 2 plays he completely owns his man, once on a speed rush and once on an inside move nearly killing McSorley.

If he is even close to what his potential is, Iowa will be murder on the defensive line. I know that line technically lacks the standard tackles, but throwing A. Nelson, M. Nelson, Hesse and Epenesa out there at the same time is going to be fun.

Starts at 52:25

He was a talented kid, but never recovered from an injury and apparent stupidity.

He wasn't even listed as a starter in the 2 deeps this Spring. Hankins and Ojemudia are pretty good. The freshman they have coming in are really talented as well. DJ Johnson had an LSU and Notre Dame offer and should play right away.

I'm going to guess that Rugumba was passed up during summer workouts by the Freshmen.

Yeah I’ll trust Phil Parker with that position. He was fantastic filling in during that Michigan game but never really did much after that. Was he the one that got attacked over and over and over against Purdue?

Nope, Ojemudia

To be fair, I think he actually was as they put 3 guys in there and they smoked all of them. Pretty sure it was Ojemudia, then Rugumba and then Hankins.

I think I am thinking of the first two possessions of the Michigan State game now that I think about it. They kept throwing to Felton Davis.

@HawkLax6 starts at 101:35 and first play of the second half. Rugumba gets picked on for an 11 yard gain, then gets a pass interference on the next play. Then on the third play gets beat on a slant for 14 yards. The fourth play he gets burned over the top for a 42 yard touchdown.

Ojemudia comes in the next series on the first play gets beat on a fade for 35 yards. Hankins immediately comes in and 2 plays later is beat for a 16 yard touchdown.

7 plays, 6 to the same WR, 2 touchdowns on 3 cornerbacks.

That wasn’t pretty and I will not watch it again. I’ll take your word for it Douglas.

I should also point out after all of that Parker finally put Josh Jackson on him and he didn't do shit the rest of the game.

Victim of his own success. Pretty sure he was talking about whether he should forgo his Senior year after his Freshman year. That's a first class ticket to the doghouse.

There’s no doubt AJ is going to be a monster this year. He’s going to get a lot of attention which will free up Nelson.

The defensive backs will be very good by the end of the season.

The d line and secondary should not be a concern. Breaking in all the new LB could be an adventure but hopefully they will benefit from playing behind a strong defensive line.

I’m sure it was already posted but Miles Taylor is a defensive assistant now. That’ll help.

Taylor annoyed the hell out of me sometimes as a player, but you don’t start for parts of 3 seasons without learning something. As for the DBs, I think at least one of Hankins/Hooker will have a big year. Will need young guys to contribute at corner and hopefully we figure something out at the other safety spot with Snyder/Stone/Gervase. Would rather not see Gervase start, but could easily see that happening.

Taylor always seemed like a strong leader, regardless of his production.

I was told manny “can’t stay out of trouble”. He’s gone.

Yep, I always loved the way he popped up quickly and hustled back to get everyone lined up for the next play after he got beat the previous play.

The NCAA needs to come up with some kind of punishment for any athlete who uses the phrase "With that being said" going forward.

He'll always have that INT but if you go back and watch the Michigan game that convinced everyone he was the next Des King Rugumba wasn't actually very good. He got burned deep repeatedly only to get lucky when Speight airmailed the pass. And then last year he didn't really do anything despite being given every opportunity to lock down a starting job. I don't think it's a huge loss, especially with the way Iowa has recruited at corner.

Yep. I think Hankins has a ton of potential. Creamer also has quite a bit of potential too.
