5’11” 215. The walk-on pipeline from Iowa Western continues. I could see this guy being useful at some point.
His juco coach says he thinks he's on scholarship for whatever that's worth. Dunno what the numbers look like right now but wouldn't be surprised if a couple more kids have left, or they put Toks on a medical scholarship since it seems like he probably can't play ever again.

Regardless seems like a good pickup. First team All American at the Juco level and that's a position where they really need bodies. It'd get ugly in a hurry if Young or Kelly-Martin go down

That is the second high profile boxer's son to fail at Iowa.

I do this about once per year, but get a kick out of looking at the list of FBS head coaches and how rare Iowa's situation is compared with the rest of college football.

Ferentz is of course the longest tenured head coach and only one hired in the 90's. Gary Patterson at TCU is the only other person close after being hired in 2000.

This one stood out..... since Ferentz started at as Iowa's head coach, Nick Saban has had 4 different head coaching jobs and Saban is still is the 10th longest tenured FBS head coach. Bill Snyder retired and came back and is the 15th longest tenured coach.

There are only 16 out of 129 coaches hired before 2010.

And Patterson's first real season was really in 2001 (he just coached the bowl game in 2000).

During the team’s max-out period this spring, Fant’s vertical jump this spring would have ranked third in NFL combine history. Stanley witnessed the event and called it “crazy.”

“We’re all kind of doing our verticals at the same time, but when you hear a coach say, ‘42,’ your jaw just kind of drops,” Stanley said. “It’s pretty special to be able to do that. It’s pretty spectacular.”

This is also across all sports. Athletes who notify the University of their intent to transfer must be placed in the NCAA transfer database within 2 days.

Yeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssss

This is going to be interesting to see how it works out. I would say at a minimum it makes every program stronger if used properly and they have a talented freshman class.

Injury situations or even flat out mercenary situations will exist. You can avoid the AIRBHG situations easier by having a deep roster at positions that need it.

The downside is a Fran McCaffery type that tries to play too many guys early and screws up reps and doesn't allow the team to grow naturally.

I wonder if the Bowl Game will be included in this as well.

So a freshman can sit out the first 8 games, and then when depth is needed at the end of the year, they can play without using any eligibility?

yes.

a guy like Ott in 2012 would have just missed (he wound up playing five games) but prevents teams from trying to have to figure out if they want to pull a shirt late.

also basically means everyone will get to play in an early-season blowout and then you can decide long-term plans as you go.

Correct.

A school like Iowa that ends us decimated at the end of the season and doesn't have the depth like a Alabama or Ohio State can now play freshman if needed.

I also wonder if they are going to extend this to anyone currently on the roster at the start of the 2018 season.

It also would have been to his advantage in his final season. I didn't see any restriction to it being freshman only.

It also allows the freshmen to develop during the course of the season and provide more value at the back-end of the season.

It would make sense to get rid of the medical waiver all-together with this new rule. Takes subjectivity out of any decisions.

The medical waiver is still good if you need a 6th season.

The players this will suck for is walk-on upper class that will have their playing opportunities taken away.

It would work out nice for Petras if he wins the 2nd string job like Stanley did two years ago. You get him some mop-up time when you can in case of injury, but don't play him that 5th game unless needed.

Bowl games count against the 4 games played, though, from what I'm reading. So, really more like 9 games they'd have to sit out.

Overall, a good rule change for Iowa. Sit those stud Freshmen in the non-conference and early conference games to get them up to speed and then have the ability to unleash them at the end of the season.

Not sure this is true. I think it's entirely possible you'll see less true freshmen as full season ST-only players now which would lead to more ST playing time for these upper class walk-on types.

I guess that makes sense. Instead of seeing Max Cooper in every game, you see him in 4 games and walk-ons are relied upon heavier to fill in.

Either way, makes it more interesting to see what the strategy will be moving forward.

I don't think this rule change will have much of an impact on Kirk's personnel decisions at all.

I don't agree with that if the premise is that Ferentz plays it safe. He has shown numerous times lately that he will play young guys including a true freshman quarterback and true freshmen linemen.

It won't matter as he won't be around anyways, but it would have made the decision to play Stanley for a quarter his freshman year a little more tolerable.

All I mean is that there will be very few guys getting playing time as a result of this rule that would not have been getting it anyway.

In the beginning of the season maybe, but I think there could be guys getting some snaps late in the year that otherwise wouldn't.

Correct, that is what I see as the biggest change. You see guys playing for depth late in the year.

I think it will make some bowl games slightly more tolerable for your team when you are 6-6 or 7-5 and they get to play a bunch of young players who haven't played their fourth game yet (assuming your coach decides to say fuck it and play the young guys).
