Getting rid of Chryst was the dumbest thing they could’ve done and a return to the pre-Alvarez days isn’t that hard to imagine.
I'm not sold on that first part - it's said that Chryst no longer wanted anything to do with recruiting, which seems like a problem if your profession is "college football head coach".

Their mistake was abandoning the run-first-only-and-always identity that they'd established over thirty years of sustained success for some dumb West Coast/spread shit, especially after NU conclusively established how stupid that is over the last twenty years.

They are now Cheesy Nebrantska, and it couldn't happen to a better program. Fuck them with a block of sharp Cheddar.

Getting rid of the Wilcox/Leonard 3-4 really fucked them too. They smothered us for many years. We had like 80 yards against them the game after we put up 56 on Ohio State.
It was 66 yards and it was very embarrassing.

But as Chip said, abandoning the run to try to move up in the college football pecking order was retarded. We can all bitch that Kirk is too stubborn but he’s also knows where he’s coaching and isn’t dumb enough to abandon a philosophy that fits the type of athletes he has access to.

Even dumber, it was actually a full blown Air Raid system. Their new OC this year seems to run a more balanced spread, was OL coach under Chizik when Auburn won the title in 2010 with Cam.

He knows where he’s at on the depth chart or he already has a spot lined up.

Edit to add I think Brown was likely to be ahead of him for the backup spot.

I was thinking why not transfer back in January? In fact i had sort of forgotten he was still on the roster.

Yep, he got jumped by Brown. They also have Stratton and the other Sullivan.

It's fine, as much as it was fun to have him in the game in the red-zone, he wasn't very good and couldn't stay healthy.

I don't know about that second part, BUT it would make sense for Iowa to want Brown to get more of the reps right now considering he's currently penciled in as the guy in 2026. Couple that with Sully wanting to play his last season rather than be a gadget guy again and it just kinda works out for both parties. Sully gets his final shot, and Iowa gets back under the scholarship limit and a chance to groom a potential 2026 starter.

Spring '24:
Deacon and Marco under center. James Resar and Cade McNamra due in the fall
No RVZ, Gill, Phillips, Parker at WR and Buie-Howard with no '23 freshman PT (maybe Buie got to block a few times)
KJ was still a bit of an enigma

B Sullivan had some fun moments but they really need a QB that doesn’t just look at his first read then sprint head first into a safety.

Sullivan reminded me of high school football when a school's quarterback is injured, they just put in the next most athletic kid who has little, if any, QB experience and looks to scramble on every pass play. It was fun for a game or so

Very true, I went to a small school and our JV qb got hurt so they brought down a very athletic varsity receiver to qb a jv game with very little experience. 2nd possession or so he audibled to a sweep right that had a slight problem, due to the formation, there was no rb on that side. He pitched it to empty space for about a 12 yard loss. Next play he scrambles for a 60 yard td. I think it was against Gladbrook or another shitty team like that. Maybe Hudson.

ok, but you were the most athletic, short, portly, usually intoxicated softball player for HaLo.

He was about as average as average gets. Someone will be dumb enough to sign him but it would be funny if no one did.

Compared to the statues we’ve had over the last 5-6 years, he was very refreshing

151 yards passing - 1 TD
27 yards rushing - 3 TDs which should have gone to RBs if Bud Kilmer weren't coaching)
So yes 4 TDs against Iowa's best defense ever. 2 of the running TDs weer scrambles. I am surprised he was a disappointment last year. He looked liked future Heisman to me.

In 8th grade our backup QB came in and called "Green Zero" at the line 3 straight plays.
"Green" meant audible and "Zero" meant QB sneak. He got destroyed all three times.
He killed himself a few years ago and some people blamed it on CTE from his rugby days.
I think it was the shame of what he did in the 8th grade.

He might be the only All-American to not be on scholarship.
