I often have trouble processing paradigm shifts, but it seems dumb to affiliate these players with a “school” anymore. What’s the point? It’s absurd. “Yes, we’re paying him $3m/yr but he’s outta here if he doesn’t get that Econ grade up.”

the cognitive dissonance, it burns us!
I’m curious what these NIL deals look like. Are they incentive-laden? Guaranteed? Do they get paid in full upfront or on installment? I can't imagine the typical 18 year old with a million burning a hole in their pocket is going to make the best decisions. Also, from a team aspect, I'd imagine it might cause a few rifts. Imagine if Iowa still had some redass killers on the line and Kadyn Proctor, who has done really nothing to this point, walked in the door as a newly minted millionaire.

Football players on scooters will be a distant memory. Scooters are still cool, though.

I’m generally a “It’ll work itself out” kind of person, but the fundamental elements of big time “college” athletics after this change may be irreconcilable in my feeble mind.
There has to be some rules that allow for predictability. I don’t see how that can be done in the confines of the NCAA

This is where I see the problem.

How do you explain to a guy like Cooper DeJean that the WR from Alabama is going to get more than he does?

As it stands today, if you’re a for sure P5 level player you probably should use the portal once to git all you can git

Is there an avenue for players like DeJean to approach the Iowa collective?

Put Shawnee in as the P5 commissioner and all the problems get fixed in about 7 minutes.

At that point, why waste money on players coming in as freshmen that are just going to leave in a year or two?

Pretty sure DeJean got a pretty good sponsorship deal from Midwest One Bank.

If you have the means that’s what I’d expect the top dogs to do in addition to the top 5-10 hs kids in each class.

I could see a place like Ohio st/Alabama sign ~ 10 hs kid & 10 portal guys every year.
At Iowa probably more like 15 hs/5 portal on average

And a nice Jeep from a car dealership, all before he ever took a snap. He’s doing just fine.

You have to keep signing full classes even at P5 level, because no team is going to be immune to guys hitting the portal. You can’t sign 10, portal 10 and lose 5 every year.
I understand that but thank you

Exactly. Instead coaches will do a nice house Creaning every year to open up spots when portal season comes a calling.

This is essentially Fran’s stance. Not throwing $250k at a kid in the portal when he has a potential AA sitting on his team currently making way less.

It makes sense to me.

There are plenty of other schools writing massive checks and dealing with some serious fallout at the moment inside the football offices

The difficulty is that there are no F’n rules with this.

The way it’s being done at some other programs; the “collective” is essentially divided among all the players. Then when coach has a transfer or recruit they want to land….they’re calling up a booster and saying “hey, how about doing an NIL deal for this guy?”

3rd parties get involved and help hammer out details of the contract. The issue that arises is that currently, the “rule” for these deals is absolutely non-existent. Technically, they have to provide “something” in return, but there is no guidance on what/how much and zero oversight from the NCAA.

Kirk calls up Mr Hawk and says “hey, we really want to keep KP. Need a million bucks.” Mr Hawk says sweet, here’s the million. Have him make 3 posts on Halo each month.” And we’re done.

@ditd can you confirm?

Do we think the amounts being given to guys are going to stay this high forever? Or is it an initial overreaction that will pull back once more schools have Texas A&M style disappointments with loaded rosters?

I assume what guys were being paid before it was allowed is less than what we’re hearing now, and I find it kinda hard to believe that boosters will do this year after year while schools rake in the TV money.

I hope Casey’s locations will be selling MacNamara and Cheese this fall.

But seriously how the fuck do schools compete with Oregon/Nike at this point?

It’s total free agency, EVERYONE should put their name in. See what you’re worth, and if that’s worth it to you.

This is like the wild West when the internet was invented, and MP3's could freely enter the portal and transfer themselves to your hard drive.
Well I've always called them the Oregon Buttpirates

I'm not crying over Jacobs because a) he could never stay healthy and wasn't all that great when he was and b) Iowa is going to be very desirable for some transfer portal LB's

It’s cool, as long as Peter Johnson pledges $200/year to support some schools NIL their program will be saved!

So these big money schools are just going to pick through everyone roster year after year? This shits gonna get old real quick.
It will be like the Yankees but on steroids. The only hope is that it pulls back a little bit over the next few years when teams don't perform to the expectations of the money being spent.
