I guess I disagree with that. Josh looks comfortable on the court, can handle the ball alright, plays better on defense than gets credit for, can pass it, dude just can't shoot. But he isn't an Eric May, a guy that just looks lost with the basics at times.

Note, I don't disagree that Pat should be taking some of Josh's minutes.

I understand Fran tweaking/trying new lineups in an effort to improve team defense, however he as to consider the offensive end as well. Not that Iowa has many guys that can get their own shots, however at least one, maybe two of those guys needs to be in the game at all times.

It's nice to see Iowa competing and back to being a least a slightly above average team, however it's clear that they have a lot of work to do. Outside of Marble, the guards are completely fucked any time they try to dribble into the lane in a half court set. Most teams in the top 25 have bigger/athletic guards that can get into the lane and do something with the ball.

Way too soft on the inside. Outside of Mel, the forwards are all pussies.

We won't need Oglesby next year and we'll have guys like Uthoff, Jok, and current players like Gesell who shoot just as well and can do more things than just shoot. Oglesby will never be any better than the 3rd or 4th guy off the bench here.
I think this is accurate. Can't wait for Jok, hes a steal.

Can't really bitch about the rotations last night, woodbury, gesell and clemmons all played like freshmen. May is just turrible. Our shooter can't shoot. Mccabe and Mel tried to save us but everyone else played like garbage for the most part. Defense was better at least. Lol

This is a must fucking win on Sunday. I still have visions of that faggot little freshman PG for them kicking our ass last year.

it would appear based on last nights game that Fran holds Clemmons to a much higher standard in regards to turnovers than he does Gesell.

Going two minutes down the stretch with a lineup of Gesell, May, McCabe. White and Basabe right when the game was on the line and MSU increased their on ball pressure was not Fran"s best moment.

Clemmons had a pretty rough night, it wasn't just the turnovers, four in 22 minutes, but he went 1-for-9 from the floor. He had just two less points than Gesell, but was much less efficient getting them.

Gesell had 6 points on 6 shots with four turnovers in 30 minutes, while Clemmons had 4 points on 9 shots.

I wouldn't have faulted Fran for going with Clemmons over May, but this might be the one game where I'm not going to fault Fran for going with May.

It seems like Ogeslby isn't going straight up and down when he's shooting. I noticed a few times last night that he was floating one way or the other. I don't remember if he did that one the one 3 where he completely missed the rim. And if his only purpose is to get open to shoot a 3, it doesn't look like he's doing a good job of setting up screeners.

Woodbury - I get that he's a 7'1" freshman but man, I don't understand how he can look so poorly at times on offense.

And for the few of us on here that never have said "I'm just glad I care again" I apologize in advance for saying this. But last night I was genuinely pissed off. (Hence my outrage!!11!! with the OP) The last 4 years after a loss it was more of a shoulder shrug response.

I get why he can look poor on offense, he's a 7'1" freshman like you said. He's going to have nights like that. If you look at his skill set though you'd be a fool to not be excited about his potential. What I disagree with is how Fran saves him or flat out leaves him on the bench. He doesn't really hurt you when he's out there. Let him take his lumps.

Clemons had more rebounds and assists than Gesell and played 8 minutes less. I think they played about the same.

Many of you guys have gone full fucking retard. We all knew looking at the schedule that losing the first 3 games was a very realistic possibility, but now people are going off the deep end.

Can't wait until a few weeks from now when everyone slob knobbing this team after they finally don't play a fucking Top 5 team and get some wins they should have followed by some they shouldn't.

This team is light years better than it was a year ago. We would have been buttfucked in all 3 of these games last year and all of these teams are so superior to anything we faced last year.

I think his mistakes were just so visible. The long court over-throws (not necessarily retarded, just terrible passes) and the assist to Dawson (I think it was him).

But Clemmons was bad. He did have one more assist and one more rebound in 8 less minutes, as NLP pointed out, but the same amount of turnovers and he was incredible inefficient. 1-for-9 to the tune of four points. That isn't good.

No its not. And neither PG can get by their man which makes the absence of a post threat even worse. Thats why I say go with Woody until he fucking fouls out. And keep going to him.

For fuck's sake people, Iowa is 11-5 with losses to the #2, #5, #22 and #23 teams in the country. The other loss was to a team with an NBA guard and was on the road. All except the loss to #2 were close until the very end. One of them we were missing out best player and another we had a key player leave at half with injury who was playing huge at that point.

We didn't play anything even resembling that sort of a schedule by this time last year. Some of you are acting as if this team has lost to a bunch of Cambell's and Clemson's.

Last night was a wonderful example of how, at least for certain coaches/teams, the refs/conference/NCAA has allowed the game to become far too physical. Ruins it for me.

I tend to side w/ those who think we are a year away, yet. I agree this team could make a run, but we won't sneak up on anyone anymore. Winning w/out Marble last night was a pretty tall order. We had no legit offensive threats/matchup problem for MSU to worry about, so Izzo could just turn his wrestlers loose, knowing no one was going to blow by them or stick a jumper in their face.

Fran needs to tell Gesell to forget about being a distributor and start being far more aggressive with his shot. He has the ability to be a big threat as a 2 guard coming off screens and it will open shit up for everyone else.

You're not wrong Doug.

What you're seeing is people who thought this was a NCAA tourney team. With that in mind, Iowa has to have some quality wins. Last night should have been that win. Sure, they may very well beat up on the Nebrantska, Northwestern, and Penn State, however they probably wont' get a tourney bid.

Iowa has faced roughly 12-15 potential NBA first round or lottery picks in the last 3 games including one that may be the #1 pick in the draft and another who may be a Top 5 pick.

Calm the fuck down people.

We are 3 games into the conference season and were very close to getting 2 signature wins under some shitty circumstances.

There are going to be many more opportunities in the next 15 games to get some signature wins and this team will end up getting a couple.

Fair enough. Based on what we've seen so far, I don't see this team stepping up in crunch time of key games.

I hope I'm wrong.

At least there was good reason to be a pussy there, dude was coming hard.

(Gayest thing I've ever said?)

What irks me is the break away where Clemmons fucking tapped Appling's (maybe it was someone else) shoe. He fucking guided him to the hoop, didn't attempt to defend, then barely touched him.

I thought the same thing leaving the arena last night. Gesell has been a pretty good shooter all year and they needed to find spots for him to score. Sitting Clemmons and not having Marble hurt that.

Gesell is a upgraded and more talented version of Brody Boyd. He is a 6'0'' tall SG who can score his ass off if he is aggressive and has the green light. Time to stop this silly notion he is a PG on any level and start unleashing him.

Well, have to go 9-6 going forward to make the tourney. Unlikely but possible I guess.
That can be done...

1/13 @NW - W
1/19 Wisc - W
1/22 @OSU - L
1/27 @PUR - W
1/31 PSU - W
2/3 @Minn - L
2/6 @Wisc - W
2/9 NW - W
2/14 @PSU - W
2/17 Minn - W
2/21 @NEB - W
2/27 PUR - W
3/2 @IND - L
3/5 ILL - L
3/9 NEB - W
3/14 BTT
Maybe split Purdue or Wisconsin, but even that is 9 wins. I don't think all is lost yet

Woodbury - I get that he's a 7'1" freshman but man, I don't understand how he can look so poorly at times on offense.
Exactly. Him sitting down the stretch resulted in multiple MSU dunks. At least Woody makes a guy think about attacking the rim that aggressively. My complaint about Woody is that he's soft with the ball in his hands - but it's not only him.

My excitement about Fran is wearing off quickly. He's definitely better than The Criminal, but he's not a big time coach. Hell, we can't even get consistent buckets on set plays after a TO. Real teams convert at a 75%+ clip on those opportunities. MSU was near 100% last night.

Link? Ask any coach. Do you even understand the scenarios I'm referring to? The fact that you had to ask that question indicates that you do not.

One play stood out for me last night to this point about plays out of TO's. They ran the clear out play for May that they ran for Marble against Minnesota last year on his thunder dunk. Except May did a pussy finger roll that got swatted. How's that Fran's fault?

lol.

I can't find any documentation, but here is a small study on the NBA, it isn't perfect, as it deals with late game scenarios and professional teams only, but you are just way off. So far off that I doubt you have the mental faculties to feel sufficiently embarrassed.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/37405/evidence-timeouts-hurt-scoring
Well, your study refers to the NBA, and it's limited to late game situations, which is certainly not what I'm talking about. It appears that you either didn't play the game, or played for a crappy coach. While I didn't play college ball, I played for a HOF HS coach with 400+ wins. After every single time out we ran a set play that was designed to result in a very high % shot. Our goal was 80% made buckets on those sets. These were plays that we were constantly changing throughout the season so that they were difficult to scout, and therefore difficult to defend. If you know anything about basketball, every team operates this way coming out of a timeout. MSU was nearly flawless last night after time-outs. We were lucky to get a good shot off.
