I don’t know about you NLP, but I am going all in on this Bowen kid being our Tyler Ulis.

My hopes are now sky high, and this should end well.

And by ending well, I mean that Fran’s getting a statue after he leads us to the promised land* (which I do believe he will do).

* my version of promised land is probably an E8/F4 and multiple tourney runs over the next decade.
hope you are right.

Fran has missed the tournament twice in nine years. That is above the expectation for iowa.

In terms of first round games, we lost a game on the day his kid had cancer surgery, and again on Thursday when his best player was clearly injured. 8 years between first round exits.

Fran not making the sweet 16 at iowa is more statistical outlier than anything.

Iowa has 3 straight years of First Team All-Americans and fucking big brains over here wants to bring in someone who will bring in "athletic recruits." This year's All-American is going to be a lottery pick in the NBA. Of course, the NBA is well known for drafting unathletic players in the lottery. Oh, and his twin fucking brother is coming back next year.

Just say you're an uphappy loser and move along. It's not gone unnoticed that you only showed up after this last game and you'll disappear just as quickly....so go ahead and do us a favor and finish that process up.
I am not saying Fran should go, but as an Iowa fan I really do not care how many All-Americans we have. I care about how many games we win and how far we make it to the post season. I would trade Keegan Murray in a second if we could replace him with a Johnny Try Hard IF the result was not losing in round 1. When it comes down to it, I really don’t care at all about Garza, Murry, or anyone else and their individual accomplishments

Better year is wrong. They did manage to not poop down their legs in the first round against a bad team. Iowa did unfortunately poop down their legs against a bad team

Iowa had no All Americans during the Lick-liter era. Little Lick tried hard

lol. This is so messed up.

there is nothing particularly meaningful about a sweet16. It’s the fact that you are still alive for a final four or even a title. Guess what you typically need to achieve that? Good fucking players.

ask Oregon State fans how that magical elite 8 appearance is working out.

Well I disagree. Sweet 16s are constantly measures as a level of success for teams

You said a better season. That’s simply one better game at the right time.
If you could choose 1 scenario for next year would you rather 1) Win the I am a giant douche tournament knowing you are not going to make it out of Day 1 in the NCAA or 2) Still be alive after the first game with a shot to continue on? You can only choose one

There are fans that wouldn't be cool with an elite 8 if it meant only winning 3 games next year?

What I would prefer isn't the same as better season. I know that being upset doesn't negate the season, but yes, I would trade regular season success for tournament success.

All right. That’s perfectly fine. I just disagree. I’d rather win in the tournament. I also disagree with your first sentence. What I would prefer is the better option. That’s why I prefer it. I wouldn’t prefer the option that I think is worse.

What are the expectations we have as fans? Sorry monster.

I think making the tournament 7-8 times per decade is kind of the starting point and Fran has us there. Tom Davis had us there.

The next step is to get to the second weekend or further 2-3 times per decade and Iowa just hasn’t been able to get there.

I don’t want a change due to not taking that next step. Iowa hasn’t been both successful and lucky when they’ve made the tournament. They’ve been the 7/10 a few times, won but then got blistered by the 2. Sure would be nice had the 15 seed won when Iowa did and played someone like St Peters in round 2 but it just hasn’t happened. Keep getting there like Fran has been doing and it will happen eventually.

Oklahoma in 1987. That’s the last time Iowa didn’t play chalk.

I’m sure in 2016 you were emphatically saying we had a better season than Michigan State.

I don’t recall thinking about Michigan State at all. And I’m not sure what they did or didn’t do in 2016

The Halo expectations for Fran and the Iowa basketball program are very, very low. Like Cyclone Fanatic low.

Unfortunately, the U of I athletic department seems to have similarly low expectations. That's why Carver is a morgue during nonconference play and you can get good tickets at the door for conference games. But, hey, at least it keeps the soft serve lines in check.

29-5, won the BTT, lost a 2-15 game first round. We collapsed down the stretch, beat Temple in OT then get smoked by Villanova. But we had to have had the better year right?

If this is true, then you’re a dumbfuck. Or a full blown retard. Not sure.
So you contend, on the morning of round 2 in 2016, MSU fans wouldnt have changed places with us if they could? Because I think most would.

It’s arguable, which I didn’t think was possible a week ago. ISU kicked the shit out of Iowa and has now advanced farther in the post season. Fucking dammit

I definitely wouldn’t call that loss heartbreaking. 87 elite 8 loss to unlv was heartbreaking and I’m still obsessing over it today, 35 years later. Crazy talented team blows a huge lead and possibly blows the last chance in my lifetime of seeing Iowa in a final 4

this Richmond loss was just a total turd especially since we all thought this was set up to be Iowa’s year to finally return to the sweet 16
You made my point in your last sentence. This was the year to finally return to the Sweet 16. The team had finally started to gel. There is no way to characterize this loss as anything but heartbreaking. We'll just have to disagree.

You can disagree if you want, but IN MY OPINION!!!!! the entire point of the NCAA basketball regular season is to get in the tournament. Then the point of the tournament is to win as many games to get as close to the National Championship as possible. More regular season success is important because you get a better seed, which increases your chances to advance in the tournament. So the only measure of success to me, is advancement through the tournament.

If we are the last team in next year but playing on the 2nd weekend, I understand most of you will think we regressed, but to me that will be a sign of improvement.

Yes I think they would have rather advanced to the second round and not won the big 10 tournament as opposed to getting embarrassed in front of the country by a 15 seed
Ya know, there's nothing stopping you from gathering evidence to conclusively support your point. Stop by an MSU board, float the idea that Iowa had a better season than MSU in 2016, and let us know how that's received.

Is St. Peter’s a better program right now than Kentucky? People are asking that question…

Right, but Iowa isn't Kentucky and Iowa State isn't St. Peter's- and we are talking season, not program.

Iowa finished in a three way tie for 4th in the second best conference while Iowa State finished tied for 7th in the best conference.

Even with the first round exit, I would take Iowa's season. If Iowa State beats Wisconsin, I would take their season.

Would you not trade a couple of conference standing spots for the Sweet 16?

I get what you are going at, but I think you're overstating it. Maybe the tournament shouldn't be the be all and end all, but it sure as shit should count for something.

Right now I'd want to still be in the field after round 1. But if we ended up losing in round 2, I'd regret it and wish we at least had the douche tourney trophy to show for our efforts.

The St. Peter’s part was meant to be in response to his “last team in but reach the S16” as a sign of improvement in the program. I’m also just curious to see how crazy far he’ll take this.

lol, you don’t get a choice. Do you think Oregon State’s program is anywhere in the realm of ours?

They got lucky one year. It was likely very fun for them. The other 9 out of 10 years suck.

The best way to have tourney success is to 1. Get good players and 2. Consistently make the tournament.

You can disagree if you want, but IN MY OPINION!!!!! the entire point of the NCAA basketball regular season is to get in the tournament. Everyone wants to make a final four or win a title, so there are zero people who will knowingly ahead of time except anything less than that. The unknown upside is part of what makes sports fun.

Honestly if there were ever a case in which at the beginning of the year I was willing to accept simply making the tournament, it may have been this year.

it also means that iowa had a really bad day at a bad time and we are still a good program and had a really good season.
